New technologies (laptops, smartphones, video games, etc.) are taking over traditional books, and social networks offer different and attractive content. But how to cultivate a love for reading in our children? The answer to this question is extremely important, especially if we accept that the love for books not only enhances their academic skills but also enriches their imagination and provides endless opportunities for learning and personal growth.

Don’t wait until children are old enough to read on their own.

Starting to read to children from early childhood, when they are still unable to read on their own, is very important. We can begin with little bedtime stories or fairytales and have interesting conversations about them to create a habit. This can help children associate reading with comfort and pleasure.

Make reading an enjoyable activity together

We often say that children learn first from their parents. If a parent spends much of the day with a phone in hand, it is difficult to expect anything different from the child. As parents, we must be able to share our passion for reading with our children. Talking about a novel or a story that we enjoyed is an excellent way to encourage them to experience this pleasure as well. When children see us reading, they are likely to want to do the same.

Create a Reading-Friendly Environment

It is very important to create a welcoming and comfortable place in the house for reading, with a small bookshelf to hold our favorite books and the books we plan to read.

Visit Libraries and Bookstores

Regular visits to the library or bookstore can be exciting. Many libraries offer book discussions and other activities that make reading a social and enjoyable experience.

Choose Books That Can Interest a Child

We must pay attention to our children’s interests and find books that match. Be it fairy tales, sports, animals, or space, there are books available on every topic. Allowing children to choose their own books can significantly increase their enthusiasm for reading.

Make Reading Interactive

Engaging with children while they read (asking questions about the story, discussing the illustrations, and predicting what might happen next) can be crucial. This interaction not only enhances comprehension but also makes the reading experience more enjoyable and dynamic.

Celebrate Reading achievements

It is so important to celebrate our children’s reading achievements, whether it’s completing a book, learning a new word, or reading aloud with confidence. It boosts their self-esteem and motivation to continue reading.

Encourage Writing

Writing and reading go hand in hand. We have to encourage our children to write their own stories. This not only improves their literacy skills but also fosters a deeper appreciation of literature.

Connect Books to Real Life

It’s preferable to help our children to make a connection between books and real life. For example, if the book is about animals, we can visit the zoo. If it is a historical novel, we can watch a suitable documentary together or visit the appropriate museum. These connections increase comprehension and make reading more meaningful.

Lilit Avagyan
MFE Co-founder
Teacher

Children read less;- We hear this statement everywhere.
