Paudel is the first ambassador from Japan to participate in the programme.

According to The Japan Times, Paudel was born in Japan but spent the early years of her childhood in Nepal. After returning to Japan, she had to learn Japanese again. Growing up between the two countries helped shape her interest in languages, books and education.

A Love of Reading from Childhood

One of Paudel’s earliest memories is of her grandfather giving her a newspaper written in Devanagari, a writing system widely used in South Asia, when she was still in preschool. Despite the difficulty of the script, she was able to understand the text, surprising those around her.

Books continued to play an important role in her life. Her father encouraged her reading habit by regularly buying her books. Paudel particularly enjoyed fantasy literature, including works by Enid Blyton.

According to Andrew Kay, founder and CEO of the World Literacy Foundation, Paudel was selected for her leadership, passion for literacy and commitment to supporting young people in Japan.

As a literacy ambassador, Paudel will work with other young ambassadors and encourage young people to make reading part of their everyday lives.

17-year-old Aditi Paudel has become Japan’s first literacy ambassador, taking on an international role to promote reading and literacy among young people.
