On September 8, several school principals in Gegharkunik Province, as well as the head of a relevant department at the Gegharkunik Regional Administration, were arrested as part of criminal proceedings initiated by Armenia\u2019s Anti-Corruption Committee over cases of giving and receiving bribes.<\/p>\n

The information was provided by the Anti-Corruption Committee.<\/p>\n

Karen Zazyan, Head of the Education, Culture and Sports Department of the Gegharkunik Regional Administration, is accused of receiving bribes in several instances in exchange for patronage and allowing violations in favor of a group of individuals, including school principals.<\/p>\n

Until September 1, 2026, regional governors had certain powers to manage schools under their jurisdiction. The legal basis for these powers was Government Decision<\/a> No. 1392-N of July 25, 2002.
As of September 1, 2026, the founder\u2019s powers over state schools operating under the jurisdiction of regional administrations have been transferred<\/a> to the authorized state body responsible for education administration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Within the framework of a criminal proceeding initiated by the Anti-Corruption Committee over cases of giving and receiving bribes, three of the individuals detained the previous day, including the head of a relevant department of the Gegharkunik Regional Administration and one of the school principals, have been remanded in custody as a preventive measure.
