One of the notable discoveries at the<\/strong><\/a> 9th Yerevan International Book Festival last week was a handmade book made in just 100 copies. Each copy is dated.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The author of the project is Lilit Altunyan, with the book \u201cThe Girl Who Could Fly.\u201d The book went from idea to reality thanks to the consistent work of the \u201cTesa Patum\u201d organization, which values \u200b\u200boriginal projects. Lilit Altunyan and artist and animator Karine Aroyan are at the origins.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

The response to the handmade illustrated book made of cotton-soft pages was interesting: usually, when we read the text, images form in our minds, but in this case, everything is the opposite: by looking at the original handwritten pictures, you yourself complete the story, which is unique in each case.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

\u201cI wanted the reader to add their own words,\u201d is Lilit Altunyan’s comment.<\/p>\n

According to Lilit Altunyan, the one who flips through a book without words becomes a co-author of the story: “Each viewer, based on their current state and their life experience, can read a completely different story. That’s what the absence of words is for.”<\/p>\n

This idea is especially interesting in the age of artificial intelligence, when the creation of images is increasingly moving away from the direct work of the human hand. Here, the opposite is true: a person interacts with pages created by the hand, enriched with artistic images, through a book made up of handmade pages sewn one by one. And this is a unique expression and relationship of human warmth.<\/p>\n

A handmade book is an invitation to the interested party to give in to the boundless imagination that is born from each unique page created with a rare printing technique and each image that transmits human energy. In this case, the energy of the creators seems to be transmitted directly to the reader: the image on each page is completely handmade.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The individual pages of the book were printed using linoleum engravings and carefully selected colors on a machine considered a model of the 19th century. Lilit Altunyan presented the details of the book’s creation with the actual tools used and original prototypes of the pages.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Graphic designer Garegin Matevosyan presented the complex task of finding the color of the book. He also told the story of finding a 19th-century machine and using it to bring the idea of \u200b\u200bthe book to life.<\/p>\n

Lilit Altunyan tried with considerable consistency to get the color she wanted. Thanks to Garegin Matevosyan’s feedback and the long search for the right color, she finally found such an impressive blue.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

\u201cIt is important that a material value is being created in Armenia that includes both book art and artistic printing. For me personally, this is an object of art, and I am glad that there is no accompanying text, because the images are so eloquent and invite the viewer to dialogue so much that anyone who picks up this book can already write their own text and dialogue with these characters,\u201d said Sona Harutyunyan, founder of the International Biennale of Artistic Printing, director of \u201cHayart\u201d and head of the \u201cCultural Dialogue\u201d organization.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish there were more books by authors like this,\u201d said Sona Harutyunyan.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

Also impressive before the discussion about the handmade book was the 7-minute presentation, in the dark under special lighting conditions against a backdrop of absorbing blue.<\/p>\n

The performance was directed by Vahan Badalyan, artistic director of the “Small Theater”, and performed by actors Kristine Danielyan and Joseph Matosyan.<\/p>\n

The “Girl Who Could Fly” project seems to be just beginning its journey, with the splendor of blue.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
