Teach For Armenia founder and CEO Larisa Hovannisian said in a statement issued on the PISA 2025 results that they have finally provided data on an issue that the organization\u2019s teachers have been raising for years.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2013, the participants in Teach For Armenia\u2019s two-year program, known as Teacher-Leaders, are recruited and trained before spending two years teaching full-time in Armenia\u2019s public schools, particularly in communities where educational opportunities are more limited. According to the organization, its network today includes around 500 Alumni-Ambassadors across Armenia\u2019s 10 regions.<\/p>\n

According to Larisa Hovannisian, teachers working directly with 60,000 students in Armenia\u2019s public schools have seen children who can read a sentence but cannot say what it means. \u201cWe called it what it is: functional illiteracy,\u201d Hovannisian wrote in her statement.<\/p>\n

In Armenia, only 19% of 15-year-olds reached the baseline level of proficiency in reading in PISA 2025. The figure was 28% in mathematics and 28% in science. The results of Armenia\u2019s first participation in PISA were published last week.<\/p>\n

According to Larisa Hovannisian, Teach For Armenia has spoken about this issue in classrooms, reports, and discussions on education policy, but the same fair question has been raised every time: \u201cWhat is your data?\u201d<\/p>\n
