\u201cMaking learning a national cause would be the most important response to PISA 2025. What is at stake is not the country’s position in an international ranking, but its capacity to educate citizens who are able to understand the world, think independently, shape their own future, and care for our common home.\u201d This is how Guiomar Alonso, UNESCO Representative in Peru, responded to the results of PISA 2025.<\/p>\n

In Peru, only 42% of students reach Level 2 or above in reading in PISA, while the figure is 47% in science and only 30% in mathematics. Behind these figures are young people who struggle to understand what they read, make connections between ideas, evaluate information, and solve problems.<\/p>\n

The Role of Pedagogy<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Alonso, Peru\u2019s response should first and foremost be pedagogical, with equity at its core. \u201cNo digital tool can replace a teacher who sparks curiosity, teaches students to ask questions, challenges ideas, and helps them develop independent judgment,\u201d Alonso argues in an official UNESCO publication.<\/p>\n

According to the UNESCO Representative in Peru, the education system should ensure not only that more students learn, but also that a much larger number of students achieve high levels of performance, regardless of their social background, place of residence, or their families\u2019 economic circumstances.<\/p>\n

Who Is Responsible for Education?<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the UNESCO Representative, education is not the responsibility of the education sector alone. The response should involve the state, regional and local authorities, schools, teachers, families, universities, businesses, the media, and civil society.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are few things that can unite us as strongly as the goal of ensuring every child and adolescent has the opportunity to learn,\u201d the UNESCO Representative concludes.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
