Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and Finance Minister Eelco Heinen are expected to discuss reforms to benefits for people on long-term sick leave and possible cost-saving measures with trade unions. Cutting funding for the Ministry of Education is being considered as a last resort, by not increasing the education budget in line with inflation. In that case, the education department would have to make savings of up to \u20ac1.2 billion in total.<\/p>\n

The potential cuts are also politically sensitive for the Prime Minister\u2019s party, D66. During the election campaign, the party had advocated reversing the \u20ac2 billion in education cuts planned by the previous government and considers higher education one of its priority areas.<\/p>\n

According to the Dutch public broadcaster, the prospect of cuts to education could also be used as a means of putting pressure on trade unions to make concessions in negotiations over social security reforms.<\/p>\n
