Following Armenia\u2019s PISA results, can chess help improve students\u2019 mathematics outcomes? In response to this question, Smbat Lputian, Vice President of the Chess Federation of Armenia and an International Grandmaster, said: \u201cIf we can train teachers better and have more qualified teachers, this will have a very significant impact on the development of children\u2019s educational and mathematical knowledge. I am confident about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Lputian, the educational impact of chess extends to the development of a wide range of skills. In his view, to make this impact more effective, the education sector and society need to pay greater attention to the development of chess.<\/p>\n

Speaking about the preparation of chess teachers in schools, Lputian noted that there are many good teachers with different levels of expertise, but individual successful examples are not enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we had approximately 60 percent good teachers, the impact of their work on society and the education system would be much greater, because quality needs to be systemic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lputian said this requires coordinated work involving not only chess organisations, but also the government, universities and other members of the education community.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all need to recognise and understand how important a good teacher is \u2014 both for chess and for all areas of education,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
