In France, students\u2019 dissatisfaction with school conditions has turned into a nationwide protest movement. On October 5, World Teachers\u2019 Day, France\u2019s Ministry of Education reported that 413 educational institutions had been affected by protest actions or disruptions.<\/p>\n

The movement is driven by a shortage of teachers and other staff, teachers not being replaced when absent, overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating school buildings, overloaded timetables and pressure on students related to Parcoursup. The protest movement began in Cr\u00e9teil, near Paris, and quickly spread across France.<\/p>\n

Political impact<\/strong><\/p>\n

Education problems have become a matter on the national political agenda. Prime Minister S\u00e9bastien Lecornu has instructed the ministers responsible for education and related areas to urgently begin work in five areas. The aim is to respond to students\u2019 demands. The government has officially set a deadline to announce the first decisions by the end of October.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, however, the situation remains tense. Education Minister \u00c9douard Geffray said that 24 educational institutions had been set on fire or damaged in recent days, while 78 education-sector employees had been injured.<\/p>\n

15-year-old student loses hand<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Monday, a 15-year-old student lost his hand during a protest in Lens. The incident occurred during the protest.<\/p>\n

According to the police version of events, the student had picked up a grenade fired by police and intended to use it to disperse the blockade, but it exploded in his hand. However, the prosecutor in B\u00e9thune said it was not yet possible to establish whether the student had picked up the grenade or whether it had been thrown in his direction. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the body responsible for overseeing the activities of the French police. The student\u2019s life is not in danger.<\/p>\n
