Teachers are also prohibited from using artificial intelligence to grade students’ work, monitor their behavior, or make decisions about their academic progress. However, they may use approved tools to plan lessons and carry out other work-related tasks.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York City Public Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels announced the new policy before the start of the school year. However, in an October 10 article, New York Magazine notes that city officials have yet to present a clear plan for addressing the education system’s many challenges.

Mamdani has emphasized that children’s education should be built on human interaction with teachers, collaboration with peers, and the ability to solve complex problems independently.

“The tech industry wants us to believe that A.I.-powered early education is not only inevitable, but necessary.
