The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) is scheduled to conclude hearings on October 28 in a dispute between six education unions and the provincial government.<\/p>\n

The unions are challenging the government\u2019s move to shift several issues traditionally negotiated at the local level to central bargaining. These include leave for local union activities, layoff and recall provisions, and unpaid leaves of absence.<\/p>\n

According to the Ontario School Board Council of Unions (OSBCU), union lawyers have presented their arguments, and representatives of the Ministry of Education and the Council of Employers\u2019 Associations (CEA), which represents school board employers, have begun responding to them.<\/p>\n

The OLRB is expected to issue its decisions, along with the reasoning behind them, after the hearings conclude. OSBCU hopes the decisions will be available in early November, allowing negotiations to resume. Major education unions across Ontario are planning strike votes in November.<\/p>\n

Protests<\/strong><\/p>\n

On October 24, teachers, education workers, students and their supporters rallied in five Ontario cities, calling for increased public education funding, smaller class sizes, more support for students with special education needs, and better working conditions for education workers.<\/p>\n

Rallies took place in Toronto, London, Ottawa, Sudbury and Thunder Bay. At the rally outside Queen\u2019s Park in Toronto, protesters claimed that the provincial government had underfunded public education by C$6.5 billion since 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>

Protesters cited a report by Ontario\u2019s Financial Accountability Office, which found that per-student funding under the province\u2019s 2026 education spending plan was at its lowest level in a decade.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

In September, Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra announced C$30.6 billion in core funding for the public education system.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
