In France, students’ dissatisfaction with school conditions has turned into a nationwide protest movement. On October 5, World Teachers’ Day, France’s Ministry of Education reported that 413 educational institutions had been affected by protest actions or disruptions.
The movement is driven by a shortage of teachers and other staff, teachers not being replaced when absent, overcrowded classrooms, deteriorating school buildings, overloaded timetables and pressure on students related to Parcoursup. The protest movement began in Créteil, near Paris, and quickly spread across France.
Political impact
Education problems have become a matter on the national political agenda. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has instructed the ministers responsible for education and related areas to urgently begin work in five areas. The aim is to respond to students’ demands. The government has officially set a deadline to announce the first decisions by the end of October.
Meanwhile, however, the situation remains tense. Education Minister Édouard Geffray said that 24 educational institutions had been set on fire or damaged in recent days, while 78 education-sector employees had been injured.
15-year-old student loses hand
On Monday, a 15-year-old student lost his hand during a protest in Lens. The incident occurred during the protest.
According to the police version of events, the student had picked up a grenade fired by police and intended to use it to disperse the blockade, but it exploded in his hand. However, the prosecutor in Béthune said it was not yet possible to establish whether the student had picked up the grenade or whether it had been thrown in his direction. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the body responsible for overseeing the activities of the French police. The student’s life is not in danger.
Student unions have announced that the protests will continue.
