Zurab Azmaiparashvili, President of the European Chess Union and an International Grandmaster, spoke about making chess more accessible to a wider audience in the context of new technologies.
According to the Grandmaster, modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, are changing the accessibility of chess. While the complexity of chess was a barrier for many people in the past, that barrier is now becoming smaller.
“I personally know many people who started learning chess and said, ‘No, no, it’s too complicated.’ It is much easier to see the ball, kick it and play football. Of course, becoming a professional football player is one thing, just as becoming a professional chess player is another, and we know how much effort it requires,” he said. Azmaiparashvili, however, stressed that the situation is changing as chess becomes more accessible.
“Today, I believe that hundreds of millions of people play chess, follow chess, are chess enthusiasts or are interested in it in different ways. And I truly believe that in a few years we will reach one billion. This is no longer a dream. In my opinion, this is reality,” said the President of the European Chess Union.
He said that such a large audience also creates new opportunities for the development of chess. Azmaiparashvili sees the development of chess in schools in the context of reaching this large audience.
Different Roles for Teachers and Coaches
Azmaiparashvili also highlighted the importance of distinguishing between the roles of a chess teacher and a chess coach in schools. He noted that there is often a misconception that a chess teacher must first and foremost be a very strong chess player. However, pedagogical skills are also important for a teacher working with chess in schools.
“A chess teacher should be good at chess and have pedagogical skills. This is very important,” he stressed.
Azmaiparashvili emphasized that the main purpose of chess in general education is not to turn every child into a professional chess player. If a child wants to pursue chess professionally and become a grandmaster, chess clubs, federations and other specialized organizations can support them in that direction.
“Our target is to make chess much more popular in the world,” he said.
